Illegal border crossings “are going down and going down very rapidly,” President Trump said during his SOTU, with his controversial policies contributing to the 70% drop in crossings since the border crisis last spring

Tonight, President Trump sought to show his base of voters he has made progress on the border wall, the signature promise of his 2016 campaign. He states that more than 100 miles of his preferred border-wall style has been erected. It’s actually not a wall, in the literal sense of the word, but a 30-foot fence of steel ballards designed to be tough to climb.

Mr. Trump has fallen short on another key aspect of his wall promise. To date, Mexico has not paid for a penny of construction. Instead, his administration has received a small amount from Congress, and has diverted a much larger sum away from military projects to pay for the wall.

Democratic presidential candidates have backed expanding coverage to immigrants who are in the country illegally.
