The 2024 presidential election is going to be decided in swing states that backed Donald Trump in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. Given that the GOP put Trump-aligned, election-denying fools in charge in those states, things don’t look great for Republicans.
Arizona and Michigan are two states that Trump won in 2016 and then lost in 2020. They combine for 26 electoral votes and are very winnable, with Biden winning Michigan by less than three points and Arizona by just 0.3 points. Republicans should win both, if they have a competent candidate.Aside from the fact that Trump is not a competent candidate and already lost both states, the Republican Party in both states has become infected by Trump’s election conspiracy theories.
Meanwhile, in Michigan in 2022, Kristina Karamo ran for secretary of state. Karamo was another promoter of Trump’s 2020 conspiracy theories, and she went on to lose her race by 14 points, with nearly 100,000 fewer votes than the GOP’s nominees for governor and attorney general. Karamo refused to concede that she lost, clinging to her identity as a loser in the same way Trump had.How did the Michigan GOP respond to this? In February, delegates made her the leader of the state party.
This is what Trump’s loser mindset has won Republicans in crucial swing states. Arizona Republicans are nursing small majorities in the state legislature and have lost both U.S. Senate seats, and now the party is going broke. Michigan Republicans picked a loser to lead them and are watching the state party now collapse in on itself.
