Former President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that his continued dominance in the polls after the first Republican debate has proven he made the"right decision" in skipping the debate, even though some polls showed a decrease in support.

In a flurry of five polls that were taken just before and after the debate, Trump saw a decrease in support in two polls and no change in the other three. However, he still holds a significant lead over his challengers."My Poll numbers are UP since the very boring, record-setting low , debate," Trump posted to Truth Social."Leading by BIG numbers.

Two polls from after the debate showed a decrease in support for the former president, although he still led the pack by a large amount. An Emerson College poll showed Trump had the support of 56% of respondents before the debate and 50% after the debate, a decrease of 6%. Polls from Insider Advantage just prior to and just after the debate showed another 6% decrease in support dropping from 51% to 45%.

The former president decided to forgo the debate last week in Milwaukee, opting to do an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead. Eight other candidates took the stage, including Trump's former Vice President Mike Pence. The interview and debate also took place the day before Trump turned himself into the Fulton County Jail on racketeering and conspiracy charges. He is one of 19 defendants in the case.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley saw a small boost in the polls after the debate but has gained more attention among voters in the general election rather than the GOP nomination.
