Turkmenistan announces a snap presidential election for March 12 after its leader Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov hinted he was ready to step down
Berdymukhamedov said he wished to remain in politics in his role as chairman of parliament's upper chamber.
"The president … gave us an instruction to prepare for early presidential elections on March 12," a spokesperson for the election commission, Bezergen Garrayev, said on Saturday. A series of promotions given to his son Serdar — who has served as a diplomat, member of parliament, minister and a provincial governor — has prompted speculation that the president was grooming him as a successor.
