Twitter laid off hundreds of employees over the weekend, leaving a staff of fewer than 2,000 to implement Elon Musk's vision for the company.
The social platform laid off at least 200 staff on Saturday night, according to the New York Times. The layoffs came after the company complicated its internal communications by ending its contract with Slack. The layoffs include Twitter Blue head Esther Crawford and design studio director Harad Thorleifsson. The company also cut product managers, data scientists, and engineers who oversaw the company's efforts to keep the website up and running. Twitter shut off access to Slack last week. Employees were told Slack was down for"routine maintenance," except that no maintenance was scheduled.
Musk fired thousands of staff in November, leaving several key offices understaffed for months. Staffing issues were exacerbated after the billionaire asked employees to sign on to work at a"hardcore" Twitter or to resign with benefits. Hundreds of staff left in response. More have been laid off since.
