'There’s always snow up there in the winter. It surprises a lot of people.'

spokesperson Abby Wines told SFGATE in a phone interview."What they did not have were ice axes. If you’re expecting terrain to be icy and steep, that goes along with it.", a challenging 14-mile out-and-back route on the eastern side of the Panamint Range. The trail features an estimated 3,000-foot elevation gain and is"basically cut into the slide of a slope," Wines explained.

“When that rescuer went down , they stayed clipped in themselves because it was so steep and icy," Wines said of the effort. The pair actually had been hiking for some time, as snow had accumulated at a low enough level that they had to park their vehicle and walk"a couple miles" on a paved road to get to the Telescope Peak trailhead."There’s always snow up there in the winter. It surprises a lot of people," Wines said. High temperatures at Telescope Peak typically hover around or just above freezing this time of the year, with low temperatures in the single digits to teens.
