Downtown Aurora took another step recently toward becoming known as a home for art studios and galleries.
Two galleries had official openings on Friday, one on the East Side of downtown, and the other on Stolp Island, the city’s middle ground between both sides.The city of Aurora celebrated with ribbon-cutting ceremonies at both the Nieponski Gallery, 59 S. LaSalle St., and The Nolan Gallery, 33 S. Stolp Ave.
And while the media are different - one focuses on paintings while the other on art photography - both are examples of the fine art community growing downtown alongside the more well-known performing arts community. Both businesses tout their showrooms, sales and even partnering with non-profits for fund-raising. And the historic building along LaSalle Street also is available for rent for special events.
The Nolan Gallery is a bit of a hidden gem in the basement of the historic Graham Building at 33 S. Stolp Ave. It features the art photography of owner and photographer Nolan McCants.The Graham Building is one of four in Aurora designed by noted architect George Grant Elmslie that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Tucked away in the basement, the gallery surprises people, as it did Mayor Richard Irvin.
