U.S. forces strike the Taliban in response to attacks on Afghan troops, signalling the weekend's deal may be at risk

KABUL—The U.S. military in Afghanistan carried out an airstrike Wednesday against Taliban militants, the first since the Trump administration signed a deal with the militant group aimed at extricating America from 18 years of war.

American pilots targeted Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan hours after President Trump spoke by phone with a top Taliban leader. The president expressed optimism that the agreement he approved would pave the way for the U.S. to pull all of its forces out of Afghanistan over the next 14 months.
