Mary Lou Retton, a legendary United States gymnast who won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics, is currently in an intensive care unit “fighting for her life,” according to multiple reports.
Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, said her mom is fighting a rare form of pneumonia and is unable to breath on her own, according to Mary Lou Retton, one of the greatest names in U.S. Olympic history, “has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,” according to her daughter McKenna Kelley’s Instagram story. “She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now.”
The world watched Retton win a total of five medals in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, including the United States’ first gold medal for the gymnastics individual all-around competition.
