The Bruins, with up 10 tackles for a loss, four sacks and four offsides penalties against Coastal Carolina, face San Diego State’s rushing attack Saturday.
LOS ANGELES — Only one sound could be heard above the crashing of shoulder pads against sleds Tuesday morning at the UCLA football team’s morning practice, and that was linebacker coach Ken Norton’s voice. It’s likely Norton was referring to San Diego State’s average of 229 rushing yards after its 2-0 start this season. The Bruins’ defense will face the Aztecs’ rushing attack Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. after giving up only 56 rushing yards in their season opener against Coastal Carolina.
“We had a very, very aggressive defensive line,” UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. “There’s also, ‘Hey, let’s sit back and not get offsides,’ but then you might not get 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks. I think there’s a fine line and the amount of offsides we had was unacceptable, but you’d rather err on our guys being aggressive and attacking than to just sit back.”
Contact during practice is limited and the Bruins only tackle to the ground in games, so they’re able to cultivate power without recklessness during the week. The front five concentrate on leverage drills and working angles that they might find themselves in while actually tackling. The defense seems to have bottled hostility, but it’s leaking into other areas of the team, too.
