of the United Auto Workers international union and the exploitative structure of the University of a California as a whole.By partaking in a wildcat strike, we refuse the bureaucracy and lack of meaningful representation in our union, which has failed to win us meaningful wage increases and other necessary rights and protections, and we refuse to let the University of California abuse us any longer.
Just as the effects of rent burden and housing crisis are felt unevenly across the grad student body, so too will the effects of a concrete COLA be differentially distributed. For grad students who are parents, this means being able to fend off food insecurity in order to provide for more than just the basic needs of their children. A COLA might look like being able to send one’s child to science camp.
The militant joy and excitement of our picket line [and traffic disruptions have] been met with police violence that reveals the brutal nature of UC exploitation of workers and students.... This level of violence is entirely unwarranted, and makes very plain the administration’s contempt for students and workers, and their willingness to spend millions to suppress our militancy and radical solidarity.
. And, most importantly, they can organize their own communities to win better living, working, and learning conditions.
