The visas are in high demand in STEM-heavy San Diego County

UC San Diego will hold a free public webinar on Wednesday to help employers and the general public understand the state of theThe program will begin at 10:15 a.m.The H-1B designation refers to a temporary, non-immigrant category of visas that employers can seek on behalf of highly educated “foreign professionals to work in ‘specialty occupations, and current research shows that H-1B workers complement U.S. workers and expand job opportunities for all,” UCSD said in a statement.

The webinar will focus on the demand for such workers, and efforts to increase the number of visas that are made available each year. The program will be produced by UCSD’s School of Global Policy and Strategy and will feature one of the school’s professors, Gaurav Khanna; Çağlar Özden, lead economist in Development Economics at The World Bank; and U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill.Caroline Freund, the dean of GPS and a former executive at the World Bank, will serve as moderator.

“It is costly in terms of innovation, economic growth and job creation for the government to limit U.S.-based firms’ access to global talent, yet that is exactly what the H-1B visa quota does,” Freund told the Union-Tribune. “The quota is vastly oversubscribed and has not changed since 1990, despite a more than doubling in the size of the U.S. economy. Imagine how the Padres would fare if the player recruitment was confined to the San Diego region.
