PITTSBURGH — Ask Kelvin Sampson if there’s a player the University of Houston has faced like Illinois All-America center Kofi Cockburn, and it becomes an exercise in futility.Ohio State’s Kaleb Wesson gets a brief mention.“He’s Kofi’s son,” Sampson, the Cougars’ eighth-year head coach, joked. “Kofi is a big man now.”
In Friday’s first round, Cockburn finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Fighting Illini, who led for a total 25 seconds, escaped with a 54-53 victory over 13th-seeded Chattanooga. Nearly every team to play Illinois this season has employed some type of double-team on Cockburn. Josh Carlton, UH’s 6-10, 245-pound center, is expected to draw the assignment in guarding Cockburn.
