The director of a film about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, accepting the Academy Award for best documentary feature on Sunday night, forcefully condemned Moscow in one of the most powerful speeches of the ceremony. Mstyslav Chernov, the director behind the Oscar-winning feature '20 Days in Mariupol,' told the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles that he wished there had never been a reason to make the film in the first place.
The film, a joint production of The Associated Press and PBS, drew wide acclaim, earning a place on the National Board of Review's list of the top five documentaries of 2023. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and later screened at the beginning of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
