Jockey and trainer take feature race for second day in a row
Trainer Phil D’Amato had four horses entered in the Del Mar feature Saturday afternoon — and went 1-2-3.
For Rispoli, it was a second feature win in as many days on the turf — continuing his Del Mar success on the grass. “We had a nice trip up the rail,” said D’Amato. “She showed her class late. They were jostling all around there. Luckily, Bellabel got a smooth trip on the inside with Umberto and kept going. Umberto’s going to do what Umberto wants to do. It’s been working out, so we’ll just roll with it.”
With the fields averaging more than 10 horses over the first 21 races, five races have been won by horses with odds ranging from 12-1 to 30-1.Two horses with strong Del Mar backrounds are the morning-line favorites in today’s two stakes races. This will be Tizamagician’s ninth start at Del Mar, where he has two wins and four second-place finishes. Trained by Richard Mandella, the 5-year-old has drawn six challengers as the 8-5 morning line favorite in the 1½-mile race for older horses. The field includes 2020 Ohio Derby champion Dean Martini.
