Crevasses were long thought of as static, icy voids. However, the Icefin robot, which traversed up and down a crevasse in the base of the Ross Ice Shelf, created the world’s first 3D measurement of ocean conditions in the grounding zone, turning this perception on its head. Photo of Icefin on the ice shelf surface after completing the final dive of the 2019 field season at the Ross Ice Shelf. The Icefin robot's journey revealed a new circulation pattern: a jet funneling water sideways through the crevasse. Furthermore, it revealed rising and sinking currents and various ice formations influenced by shifting flows and temperatures.
