Though Hickman claims defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s defensive schemes are a little more complex compared to his college schemes, he realizes how pivotal it is to make a play each time he’s on the field.
Early in the fourth quarter, there was a search for a play, any kind of play that would shift the momentum toward Cleveland’s way after running back Hassan Hill fumbled in the series prior. Washington traveled 29 yards to the Browns 19. Quarterback Jake Fromm snapped the ball and stepped back into the pocket. Fromm found what he thought was Curtin Hodges open across the middle.
“I kind of felt the in-breaking route coming from right and I was able to lock eyes with the quarterback ... so I kind of just stayed where I was at,” Hickman said. What separates Hickman other young safeties is the multiple defensive playbooks he had during his time in Columbus. a linebacker/safety hybrid who cleans up the defensive problems, to becoming the “adjuster” in Jim Knowles’ 4-2-5 defense as one of three safeties monitoring the middle.
