An unusual December severe storm threat is forecast in the Upper Midwest for later today. Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are both potential threats:
less than an hour agoDamaging wind gusts are the primary threat, but a few tornadoes area also possible.
Intensifying low pressure will track from out of the Plains to the Great Lakes into early Thursday. That low itself will generate aacross a large part of the central U.S., including many areas that won't see severe thunderstorms. A line of storms should develop on the western edge of the severe weather risk area shown below and then rapidly charge eastward toward the upper Mississippi Valley. Damaging wind gusts to 80 mph and a few tornadoes are possible in these areas, especially in areas shaded darker red and purple.Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Rochester, Minnesota, and La Crosse, Wisconsin are some of the cities that could see severe storms.
