Robert Paige IV, 27, was sentenced to 21 years in a plea deal for fatally shooting his longtime friend during a robbery gone awry.
OAKLAND — A former director for an organization dedicated to empowering youth and reducing violence was sentenced to 21 years in state prison after pleading no contest to shooting his longtime friend in a chaotic robbery plot, court records show.
Ten months before the homicide, Paige was named a youth director of the Urban Peace Movement, an Oakland-based organization dedicated to “transform the culture and social conditions that lead to community violence & mass incarceration in communities of color,” according to its website. Before that, Paige worked for Californians for Justice, a statewide organization that promotes racial and educational justice with chapters in Oakland, Fresno, Long Beach, and San Jose.
An online fundraising page for Harris describes her as a dedicated mother who “lived her life for her son and was working hard to give him a good life.” He was featured in the documentary “The Long View,” which focuses on the Bay Area’s public school system and profiled high schoolers, including Paige. The film’s director, Long Island University Professor Susan Zeig, wrote a support letter describing him as a “caring hardworking and intelligent person” whose life was thrown off course by the pandemic and the recent death of a loved one.
