The United States journalist was arrested in March 2023 while on a reporting trip in Russia. Prosecutors accuse Gershkovich of collecting classified information on behalf of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a claim both Gershkovich and the U.S. government reject. Following the journalist’s arrest, the WSJ accused Moscow of “stockpiling Americans” in Russian jails for potential prisoner swaps.
