A senior U.S. official and other members of the global coalition fighting the Islamic State group have warned that the African continent is now the main target of the extremist group

“At the same time as we are preventing the resurgence of in Iraq and Syria, we need to remain vigilant to the continued threat it poses elsewhere in the world, especially here on the African continent,” she said. It lost its last patch of territory in eastern Syria in March 2019 following a years-long global fight against the group.
