UT Arlington celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day with land acknowledgment plaque dedication.

The 4 p.m. ceremony will have elders from the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes and Caddo Nation and other Native Nations in attendance.

The plaque acknowledges Wichita and Affiliated Tribes historical homelands upon which UT Arlington was built. Tribal ancestors lived on this expanse for generations before being forcibly displaced by settlers and soldiers in the mid-1800s. The marker also recognizes achievements made by Caddo Nation and other Tribal Nations members who moved to the area during the Indian Relocation program of the 1950s and 1960s.

The event is a “culmination of a half-century fascination with the UTA roundhouse planetarium building and the mental image of the first children who looked up at the stars where the building is now,” said professor emeritus Kenneth Roemer, who has also spent two years working on a course for Native Studies for all Texas high schools. Roemer also said it is a “recognition for the Native American Student Association’s 28 years of work at UTA.

Among the scheduled speakers are UT Arlington Native American Student Association president Sampson Dewey, UT Arlington president Jennifer Cowley and Arlington mayor Jim Ross.
