UTSA earns early leg up in Conference USA title chase, beating Western Kentucky
UTSA safety Rashad Wisdom celebrates a stop during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Western Kentucky, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, in San Antonio. UTSA overcame one of the strongest obstacles on its quest to repeat as Conference USA champion Saturday, outlasting familiar foe Western Kentucky 31-28 in the Alamodome.
Harris capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive for UTSA with a 12-yard touchdown run on a draw, and Western Kentucky responded with an 80-yard, nine-play march down the field, finished off by Reed’s 2-yard scoring run. UTSA’s Jared Sackett tacked on a 49-yard field goal before halftime to give the Roadrunners a 17-14 advantage at the break.
WKU cashed in an 18-yard strike from Reed Michael Mathison to pull within 24-21 early in the fourth quarter, then went for a surprise onside kick that was jumped on by UTSA’s Kyle Wakefield.
