Glitter bombs, threats, angry calls: Out-of-town police find Uvalde a pressure-cooker
, a spring-loaded glitter bomb packed with rubber fragments went off at Uvalde police headquarters. It injured no one but raised tensions in a city already under siege.
Some police officers have ordered reporters off public sidewalks, positioned public safety vehicles to blocks photographers’ cameras and shooed mourners way from journalists — all to interfere with coverage of funerals and burials for victims of the mass shooting. “We are very familiar with the chief and the city of Uvalde,” Delgado said. “I knew that his people were coping and wanted to see what we could do to help.”
The visiting officers are supervised from an emergency operations center at Garner Field, an airport three miles southeast of downtown Uvalde. Many of the officers have helped with funeral escorts or provided security at funeral homes. Some have stood sentry outside the homes of victims’ families who wanted extra security. Some have paired with Uvalde police officers to conduct patrols. Others have inspected incoming mail.
Delgado said he and other law enforcement leaders were working on an “exit strategy” and expected that most out-of-town law enforcement will have left by Monday.
