UVALDE — The girls wore maroon uniforms and white hair bows. They placed their small hands over beating hearts and stood in silence for 21 seconds on the first base line at Avalos Field.the parents of 10-year-old Makenna Lee ElrodThe opening of the Little League All-Star district tournament this week emphasized the small community’s attempt to move forward while mourning the lives of the 19 children and two teachers lost in a horrific attack a month ago.

Four days later, the board met to confront a problem: They had agreed in March to host the district all-star tournament here. They believed it was an honor to run the event but questioned whether they should do so as residents spiraled into despair over the tragedy — and grew angry largely due to still unanswered questions from law enforcement about what exactly transpired at Robb Elementary.

In any season, hosting the district all-star tournament was considered a large undertaking. To do so after one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history seemed impossible. Little League, high school and college baseball and softball teams across the U.S. reached out to extend sympathies, as many now wear memorabilia in honor of the young athletes who died.There’s also support for those wounded, including a teacher, in the massacre. A Uvalde softball teammore than $4,000 through a lemonade stand for a 10-year-old girl who went through several surgeries.

This season, Suarez coached his 12-year-old daughter, Willa, on the Aggies when they played against the Bombshells.His daughter is now on the 10-12-year-old softball all-star team, which was set to compete Sunday night at Avalos Field.Uvalde minor league girls all-stars team members congratulate Maddison Galvan after hitting an inside-the-park home run in Uvalde on Saturday afternoon.In some ways, the vibe of the sports complex resembled any ordinary baseball and softball tournament.

“I thought people were going to be scared to come here,” said Pineda, 47, as he eyed the dozens of out-of-town vehicles parked in the sports complex lot. “Uvalde is a nice town. It’s just crazy that something like that happened here.”
