Alex Murdaugh’s comments to police about his whereabouts around the time his wife and son were fatally shot may not have been accurate.

The South Carolina double-murder trial began Wednesday afternoon in the case against disgraced legal scion Alex Murdaugh, who is accused of gunning down his wife, Maggie, and their son. Murdaugh appeared to cry and wipe tears as his defense attorney described his wife's, son's murders.

FILE - Attorney Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian speak with Alex Murdaugh during jury selection for his murder trial at the Colleton County Courthouse on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023. In the interview with Colleton County Sheriff’s Detective Laura Rutland and a state agent, Murdaugh said he checked his son's pulse but quickly realized he was so badly injured he was probably dead.

"I can't say that for sure. A lot of things would come into play to say that. Distance is one of them," Rutland said. In court, Murdaugh hung his head during graphic testimony and in parts of the recording when he cried.
