Demolishing the 1700 East bridge over I-80 and sliding the new one into place took about 100 people, seven trackhoes, and buckets of dish soap. A time-lapse video from UDOT shows the process, called accelerated bridge building.

UDOT also plans to use the “accelerated bridge building” method to replace a span of 1300 East within the year.

UDOT slides a new bridge into place at 1700 East over I-80 in Salt Lake City on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Built on-site, the new bridge was slid into place over the weekend.Spectators lined the chain-link fence along the Parley’s Creek Bike Path east of 1700 East for most of the day Saturday to watch as Utah Department of Transportation crews replaced the bridge over Interstate 80. It took UDOT crews just 3 ½ hours — and buckets of dish soap — to slide the new bridge into place after demolishing the old bridge Friday night. By early Saturday evening, cars and semi trucks were whisking under the giant American flag draped over the bridge even though“It just went faster and we had very, very few issues or concerns during the slide itself,” said project manager Becky Stromness. “Everyone was like, ‘This is just unbelievable. We haven’t seen that go that quick.

Then, the new bridge, which was built on-site slightly west of 1700 East, was slid into place.Bridge slide completed ✅. I-80 has returned to normal traffic flow. In 3.5 hours our crews slid the new 1700 East bridge into place. Using something called Accelerated Bridge Construction, a method pioneered here in Utah.
