Video: John Oliver mocks Texas news station in roast of police coverage

For Oliver, the broadcast in East Texas speaks to a larger “gap” that exists between what police tell the public and what actually has happened. This can have huge consequences because the narrative shared by the police can be wrong, he said. “All of which should be more than enough for the word of the police to be taken with immense skepticism rather than repeated verbatim,” Oliver said.Oftentimes local television stations will run a police news release verbatim and fail to follow up on crucial details, Oliver said. This can have a huge impact on how these cases are perceived by the public and prosecuted, he said.in Los Angeles, the publication found at least a dozen examples of initial police statements misrepresenting events.
