to take aim at how local TV news stations cover crime and the flawed law enforcement sources on which they rely. In the latest episode, a Texas television station was caught in the crossfire., whose coverage area includes Lufkin and Nacogdoches, for running a local law enforcement’s social media post about a drug bust on the station’s Facebook page and on an evening broadcast in 2018.

For Oliver, the broadcast in East Texas speaks to a larger “gap” that exists between what police tell the public and what actually has happened. This can have huge consequences because the narrative shared by the police can be wrong, he said. “All of which should be more than enough for the word of the police to be taken with immense skepticism rather than repeated verbatim,” Oliver said.Oftentimes local television stations will run a police news release verbatim and fail to follow up on crucial details, Oliver said. This can have a huge impact on how these cases are perceived by the public and prosecuted, he said.in Los Angeles, the publication found at least a dozen examples of initial police statements misrepresenting events.
