A growing number of Houstonians are dealing with the expensive task of replacing catalytic converters as theft of car parts continues to rise.
HOUSTON, Texas -- It took less than a minute for a thief to drive up, crawl under a man's car and steal his catalytic converter.
"I called the Mitsubishi dealer, they said just months back ordered. They said that orders back in December have not up yet," said Ryan. The trend continues this year, with nearly 2,000 incidents reported in just the first two months of the year. Hicks said Toyota Tundras remain the number one most sought-after vehicle for catalytic converter thieves as many year models have four catalytic converters.
For those who drive any of these car models, Hicks says"It's not a matter of if, it's when you will be a target."Furthermore, Hicks explained they are seeing a shift- more violence now coming with car theft crimes. "We are seeing you know people who used to rob people now stealing catalytic converters. Well, people who rob people are used to carrying a gun 'to work,' you know what they do," said Hicks.
