Cook has 16 touches in Week 1 but has just 22 in the last three games combined. His role may continue to diminish, as Robert Saleh told reporters on Wednesday that starter Breece Hall — who tore his ACL last season — will no longer be on a snap restriction. The Jets could choose to reduce Cook's playing time in favor of Michael Carter or even rookie Izzy Abanikanda due to the veteran's ineffectiveness.
The signs were there last season that Cook had already begun to decline. Although his raw numbers weren't bad, he ranked near the bottom of the league in virtually every advanced metric for running backs. The Jets believed Cook could bounce back after offseason shoulder surgery, giving him a one-year, $7 million deal with $5.8 million guaranteed, but he seems to have fallen off a cliff this season.
