Katherine Johnson, the groundbreaking NASA Langley Research Center mathematician whose work helped U.S. astronauts land on the moon and inspired the 2016 film Hidden Figures, died on Monday at the age of 101

NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement on Monday, “Johnson helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space even as she made huge strides that also opened doors for women and people of color in the universal human quest to explore space.” In 2015, Johnson received the Presidential Medial of Freedom from Barack Obama. In 2017, NASA Langley dedicated a new computer lab in Johnson’s name.
