Voters reject 3 school districts’ requests for more money; Beachwood Schools, Westlake library issues pass
The turnout for Tuesday's primary election was only 12.7% in Cuyahoga County, according to the Board of Elections.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Voters remain a tough sell on tax increases for schools, with three districts’ requests for more money for operations and building improvements being defeated in Tuesday night’s primary election.
In Parma, a 4 mill bond issue that school officials said would cover the construction cost of a $250 million high school building went down, 7,750-6,727, with 100% of results tabulated,A 2.6 mill bond issue with an 8.6 mill additional tax levy for Garfield Heights Schools was overwhelming defeated, 888-248, while a tax renewal and increase for Independence Schools was trailing, 1,115-806. Both results are final.
Beachwood Schools was the lone district to have success, with its 3.95-mill bond issue being approved, 1,308-785. The bond issue will raise $65 million to build two new elementary schools and to update the Fairmount Early Childhood Center, which also serves as the Board of Education offices. It will cost $138.25 per year for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s appraised value of a home and will be repaid over 37 years.
A five-year, 2.8 mill tax levy renewal and 0.6 mill increase for Westlake Porter Public Library easily passed, 1,981-614, with 100% of precincts reporting. The money from the levy will be used for current expenses and will cost $88 for each $100,000 of appraised home value. Voter turnout was low for Tuesday’s election, with only 12.7% of Cuyahoga County’s registered voters casting ballots.
