A collage of Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager, and Commander Chakotay from Star Trek: Voyager.

Star Trek: Voyager sent its titular ship 70,000 light years from home, but the show still found ways to incorporate characters and concepts from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Following the adventures of Captain Kathryn Janeway and the USS Voyager's journey through the Delta Quadrant, Star Trek: Voyager was the true successor to TNG.

Why TNG Was Referenced So Much By Star Trek: Voyager Voyager Truly Expanded The Star Trek Universe Close Star Trek: The Next Generation became a major success for Paramount Studios and they wanted to keep that success going. Star Trek: Voyager was commissioned after TNG ended, to air alongside Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and serve as the flagship for the new UPN network.

The Borg, for example, had been introduced on TNG and served as antagonists for Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew. Voyager further developed the Borg, offering more insight into their collective, and even introducing reformed Borg drones, like Seven of Nine . The Maquis, too, were first mentioned on TNG before becoming a major part of Voyager's set-up. Several characters from TNG also popped up on Voyager, including Commander William Riker , Counselor Deanna Troi , Lt.

Prodigy also incorporated elements from TNG, but that only makes it more fitting as Voyager's successor.
