Waiting… and Waiting for The Next Big Jeopardy Champion
Watching Jeopardy is fun, but true fans know the drill. Don’t get attached. Don’t fall too fast. Don’t cry when your newest favorite loses and leaves. Let’s face it, most of us are waiting for the next Ken Jennings, the host of Jeopardy now. In 2004, Ken lasted 74 games and won over $2.5 million. Since then, no one has beaten his record. But hope springs eternal.
I recently thought Ray Lalonde, a scenic designer from Ontario might have a long-term chance. Ray looked like a Shakespearean actor with a dignified bearing and perfectly trimmed beard. He skipped from category to category with the deftness of a downhill racer. Many of his games were ‘runaways’–where the other people had no chance of winning–but some weren’t and a few he won by the skin of his teeth. We thought he might take it into Ken Jennings territory, but alas, after 13 rounds, he lost.
