Fifth grader Zihair Douglas wins 31st annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition, delivering a fiery speech ahead of MLK Day at W.H. Adamson High School.

Students bringing weapons to school or losing their lives to “senseless violence.”

Standing the shortest of all eight finalists on stage, Zihair’s smile filled the room as he was presented with a commemorative plaque and other prizes for his win. Just like the previous two years, an anonymous donor watching the competition online was moved by the speeches and doubled the prizes. The remaining finalists — Ella Atkins of Walnut Hill Leadership Academy; Zaleeia Brown of Clara Oliver Elementary School; Daniella Mitchell of Thomas TolbertElementary School; Adrian Rojas of Arturo Salazar Elementary School and Kennedy Smith of Charles Rice Learning Center — each received $200.
