College students across the country are facing a crisis.
It's not just the basic cost of attending college, which has steadily been climbing. And it's not the stress of getting into a post-secondary program. The problem is housing. For many college students across the country, especially those who are low-income or working class, affordable housing is increasingly illusory.
The fault lies with the housing market, not with studentsWhat makes college student housing specifically so challenging is that, unlike other groups, college students are constantly moving -- changing places of residence once a year, sometimes more. That high turnaround allows for the housing market in the area to continuously become more expensive, said Ruben Canedo, director of strategic equity initiatives at UC Berkeley.
