Protecting children needs to include protecting them from exposure to psychological harm as well as physical abuse in equal measure. PTSD and trauma are real. This needs to be an everyday balancing test in every court.
Greater training must be given to our judges nationwide. Judges who run for election to Family Court should address how they will approach these issues in a courtroom.
Judges who are appointed should answer tough questions about their knowledge of domestic violence, red flags, coercive control, trauma, and PTSD in children. They should also balance the right of an abuser for visitation with a child’s protection from psychological harm.
