What should people know about the new Covid-19 subvariants, especially as many are gathering for celebrations such as Mother's Day and graduations?

Cases of Covid-19 are rising again. Infections have increased by more than 50% compared with the previous week in at least eight US states. Parts of New York have moved into the"high" designation of Covid-19 community level, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention metrics.

The surge in the United States appears to be driven by the new BA.2.12.1 variant, an offshoot of the Omicron subvariant BA.2. In the meantime, South Africa is facing its own Covid-19 wave, driven by two more Omicron variants, BA.4 and BA.5.A person receives testing for the coronavirus this week from a van in New York's Times Square.

Some people may decide that they really want to attend a higher-risk event despite the risks. If that's the case, they should get tested three days after the event and definitely before visiting immunocompromised family members. Also, know in advance if you are eligible for treatments like antiviral pills. At this point in the pandemic, it's unrealistic to tell people to avoid gatherings.
