What transpired at Stanford Law isn't as black and white as some interpretations suggest.

"Either Kyle Duncan, a federal judge, was at least as rude as any law student he’s whining about, or they’re all Doing Free Speech and it’s fine, get upset over something else."

A similar sentiment was expressed by the university's chapter of the American Constitution Society, a progressive legal organization. In, the group said the school's apology to Duncan"fueled a dishonest narrative" being circulated by"right-wing media." It said Duncan's comportment throughout his appearance made civil dialogue"impossible."

"Judge Duncan created an atmosphere hostile to civil discourse. He made inflammatory comments throughout the event, including calling students 'appalling idiots' and telling a student who asked a question couched in her experience of sexual assault that she had given a 'nice speech,'" the letter said."On multiple occasions, the room was quieted so Judge Duncan could speak. Instead, he continued berating and heckling the crowd.

While perhaps unsatisfying, there's no tidy narrative as to what transpired. It's true that the students' reactions to Duncan's appearance led the judge to cut his speech short and that a dean who was supposed to help defuse the situation told him his work"caused harm." But it also seems true that Duncan played a part in making the event more explosive than it needed to be.
