Chula Vista’s unsheltered population is the highest it’s been over the last five years. Officials are now considering policies to address the issue, but they want residents’ feedback first.
Chula Vista is looking at those as a guide and may potentially enforce provisions in their laws, but the South County city will also need to consider how to enforce policies it may adopt, Mayor John McCann said in a previous interview. Chula Vista had the second-largest number of people living on the streets at 318, a 54 percent increase from 2022, according to a January countywide. That figure did not account for the 122 in emergency shelters or transitional housing. Between 2018 and 2022, the number of unsheltered people varied from 229 to 206 and those in some type of shelter ranged between 108 and 79.
A ban on encampments or other policies would be the latest in a series of fixes, including opening a 65-unit bridge shelter and negotiating the purchase and repurpose of a motel into housing and safe parking for the homeless.
