What is social emotional learning, and is it in Alabama schools?

said the COVID-19 pandemic and changing school policies have caused their students some level of emotional distress. And about four in five educators and parents polled said they believe social emotional learning has become more important.

Some systems, like Birmingham City Schools, have departments devoted to providing social, emotional and behavioral services. Other schools contract with external providers, like Second Step or AlaQuest, which might have their own curriculums or provide trainings for educators. “SEL is not a bandaid fix – it’s really getting down to the root of things,” she said. “A lot of it is an adaptive change process, which means that it can take years [to see results].

Several providers and practitioners in Alabama and across the country follow guidelines from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning , a leading national SEL group that conducts research on best practices.
