On Wednesday, McCarthy told reporters that he would wait for Santos' trial to play out before making a decision.

about his past in the months leading up to his victory in last year’s midterm elections. Those claims, to name just a few, include untrue statements about where he had attended college and what his professional work experience entailed, as well as the manner in which his mother died. The charges against him mostly deal with a political contribution solicitation scheme, in which he allegedly used money from donors to finance a lavish lifestyle.

Backing up further, in January, McCarthy said he would decide what to do with Santos based on the findings of the House Ethics Committee, which began looking into the representative in February. Simply put, McCarthy said that if the committee’s investigation found that Santos had broken the law, the GOP would expel him from the chamber.

The GOP members on the committee, which is evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, may try to pause the committee’s work now that Santos has been indicted. Or, they could simply argue that Santos didn’t break the law. Either way, it means that any pressure on McCarthy to remove Santos likely won’t come from the House Ethics Committee anytime soon.
