When I feel beaten down by events I can’t control and people I can’t help, I look for slivers of hope.War continues in Ukraine. India and Pakistan appear under attack of a different sort — unusually high temperatures throughout both countries that put lives and land at risk. Tempers flare in the United States as polarized sides reconsider the rights of women, and we’re still not recovered from debating personal responsibility and the common good in the middle of a pandemic.

There’s hope in the sound of laughter, which is easy for me to find this time of year. School is almost out, which means classmates have been together for nine months. They’re comfortable with one another. They have inside jokes. And they’re antsy for summer. One side glance easily triggers an uncontrollable fit of giggles.
