So they came up with a different mascot to represent Feb. 2, also known in the rest of the United States as Groundhog Day. The nine-banded armadillo, the state'sFor the 12th year in a row, Bee Cave Bob will decide whether there will be an early spring or a long winter for the Lone Star State on what some Texans call Armadillo Day.
"Why should Texans need a Pennsylvania rodent to tell us what our weather will be?," Ralph Fisher, Bob's handler, toldLocated in Texas Hill Country, outside of Austin, Bee Cave was declared by the Texas Legislature the"geographical west pole" of the globe in 2007. Three years later, the"Benevolent Knights of the Raccoon" started Armadillo Day on the West Pole because screw that middle-Pennsylvania gopher .This will be the first year since the pandemic began that Bee Cave Bob resumes his duties. The armadillo will emerge from his handler's arms some time Thursday afternoon and, should he bask in the Texas sun, it'll be an early spring. If Bob finds the shade, prepare for an extended winter.
