In 2022, during the latter part of the summer, KUTV introduced you to Deena Hill, of Mount Pleasant, Utah.
The journey of learning about the unknown parts of the Ritchie Family History Tree has been enlightening for Deena Hill of Mount Pleasant. White Utah woman shares journey of discovering her Black rootsBlack North Carolina man surprised to learn about White relatives in Utah“Well, I always had this fascination with my 3rd great grandfather, Nelson Holder Ritchie, because he was a mystery — nobody knew where he came from,” said Hill during an interview in 2002.
Hill explained all her findings wouldn’t have been possible without her initial discovery of her 3rd great grandfather’s true racial identity. When asked if she had any apprehension approaching her Black relatives she said yes, because the first reactions from them weren’t always positive. Her cousin Desi Campbell stepped in to help smooth things over with the relatives who didn’t understand the family connection between them and Hill.
