The entire Tahoe basin may reach record temperatures this weekend, which could lead to flooding throughout the region.
region will likely reach about 75 degrees Friday before creeping up to about 76 degrees Saturday, National Weather Service forecasts show. According to Christopher Johnston, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Reno office, the “whole Tahoe basin” is expected to be about 20 degrees hotter than normal.
“We’re close to record territory for sure,” he said. For the date of April 29, Tahoe City’s record high is 74 degrees, set in 1926, and South Lake Tahoe reached a record-setting 75 degrees just two years ago.snowpack, leading to potential flooding in the Tahoe region. “Near record high temperatures through Sunday will bring significant streamflow rises, especially for snow covered terrain below about 8000 feet,” a Friday weather service advisory. As a result, the Greater Lake Tahoe area, among other regions throughout California and western Nevada, has been placed under flood watch through Monday morning.
Anyone who plans on participating in recreational activities near creeks and rivers this weekend is advised to exercise caution. “Creeks and streams will be running high and fast with minor flooding impacts along several mainstem rivers as well,” the weather service warned. “The water will be extremely cold, quickly causing shock.”
