and reserve Jordon Ingram. Alston will give the team five scholarship backs in the stable, and while it’s unlikely all five will have consistent roles within the offense, Williams believes Alston can provide some instant value to the room this fall.
Rated as the No. 32 running back in the country coming out of high school, Alston set the career rushing record at Woodward Academy, where he ran for 4,195 yards and 62 touchdowns. The numbers were impressive, of course, but they weren’t — nor should they have been — everything Williams looked for when evaluating Alston during his recruitment, which really began during the pandemic-induced extended dead period.
What Williams saw when he pored over the film was a running back who checked all those boxes and collected those “hidden yards” earned on broken plays. He was impressed with how Alston reacted in those situations, how he made defenders miss in the backfield and, perhaps most importantly, how he was able to turn a 2-yard loss into a 3-yard gain.
