Cavs star guard Donovan Mitchell will not sign a contract extension before the season opener on Oct. 25 -- and he has let the front office know that.
Cavs star guard Donovan Mitchell, the perennial MVP candidate whose arrival heightened the organization’s expectations last summer, will not sign a contract extension before the season opener on Oct. 25 -- and he has let the front office know that.“I still have the opportunity to sign an extension next summer,” Mitchell said during the team’s annual media day on Monday afternoon. “My primary focus is this.
Mitchell has two more guaranteed years remaining on a deal he signed while in Utah. He is set to make $32.6 million in this season and $34.8 million next season. There is a player option for 2025-26 and then he can become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026, when he turns 30 years old. “I’m really excited about what we’ve got going here,” Mitchell reiterated. “I think that’s the biggest thing, especially for myself. We could do something special. That’s what I relayed to Georges and Max when I told them about coming here. When the season over, we we’ll get to that. I’ve addressed that with the front office and whatnot. I know it’s a world where it’s always talk. This won’t be the last time I’d probably have to answer this question.
