Decades after the sexual revolution and before MeToo, E. Jean Carroll tucked away her pain and projected a carefree attitude. Now she’s accused of having too much fun.
For a long time, when Carroll would talk about the violent turn that she said occurred after what seemed like a serendipitous encounter at Bergdorf Goodman with the city’s best-known real estate developer, she had been hesitant to use the word “rape.”“I liked the word ‘fight,’” she told the courtroom. “I felt it gave me action. It wasn’t something done to me.”
In clips presented by the defense — from interviews with Anderson Cooper, among others, around the 2019 publication of Carroll’s book “What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal,” where the allegations at the center of the case were made — she appeared effervescent, animated, well-suited to a publicity tour.
The following day, her close friend, writer Lisa Birnbach, further detailed this approach. Taking the witness stand, she recalled that Carroll had phoned her immediately after the alleged incident with Trump “breathless, hyperventilating, emotional,” but that the subject did not come up between them again for another quarter-century. “Ms. Carroll is a very up person; she is not a victim,” Birnbach said. “Instead of wallowing, she puts on lipstick, dusts herself off and moves on.
