Here's why 2.7 deg F should be used rather than 1.5 deg C when discussing climate change in the U.S.
This is actually something that has bothered me for several years, and my sensitivity to it is particularly heightened as the world discusses COP26. Virtually every news story or scientific document related to the global climate meeting is talking about limiting global warming to the 1.5-degrees C goal set forth in the Paris Agreement. Here’s the problem. Most Americans don’t think in terms of the Celsius scale so the urgency of the climate crisis is muted.
Let’s take our “fever” analogy and convert that into Fahrenheit. Would you sit by idly if if your child ran a fever of 101.3 degrees F . Exactly! This is why it is important for scientists and the media to use Fahrenheit, in my opinion, when discussing the climate numbers. I know, I know. The rest of the world uses Celsius. Yep, that’s our “bad.” According tothere is no logical reason why the U.S. still uses Fahrenheit other than familiarity and inertia.
133 degrees Fahrenheit/56 degrees Celsius at Furnace Creek Visitor Center on July 11, 2021 in Death Valley National Park, California. An excessive heat warning was issued for much of the Southwest United States through Monday. Climate models almost unanimously predict that heat waves will become more intense and frequent as the planet continues to warm. Even the U.S.
My intent is to point out what the National Weather Service seems to understand. The vast majority of the U.S. public consumes Fahrenheit. If that is the case, talk about climate change using the scale that they understand.
